Jessica Ogunye, PMHNP-BC

I trained where the obvious answer is usually wrong.

Board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Licensed in Maryland, Washington DC, Arizona, and Idaho.

I did not start out in psychiatry.

I started in a pediatric intensive care unit, and then in bone marrow transplant oncology, which are two places where you learn very quickly that the story a patient tells you and the story their body is telling you are not always the same story.

That turned out to be the most useful training I could have had.

How I Got Here

The long way around

After critical care and oncology I became a lead nurse building the nursing protocol for autoimmune encephalitis. It is a condition that arrives looking exactly like a psychiatric illness. People are brought in confused, agitated, sometimes psychotic, and the answer is not psychiatric at all.

I spent years learning to sit with a complicated presentation and not take the first explanation. I also worked as a trained clinician rater for ketamine, TMS, and ECT protocols, and with people whose illness had not responded to the usual things.

Then I trained as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, because the part of the work I cared about most was the conversation, and there was never enough time for it.

How I Practice

What you can expect from me

Time

A full hour

Your evaluation is sixty minutes, because you cannot understand a person in twelve. If we need more time, we take more time.

Honesty

Reasoning shown

I tell you what I think and why, in plain language. If I am uncertain, you will hear that too. If someone else is a better fit for you, I will say so and help you find them.

Respect

You decide

Nothing gets started without you understanding it. That includes what a medication is for, what to watch for, and how you would stop if you wanted to.

A Space Where You Belong

Why I built this practice

I built Blooming Minds for people who have felt unseen in clinical rooms. The ones who were talked past, or handled quickly, or who quietly decided it was easier to stop explaining.

Your culture, your family, your history, and the parts of your life that never fit neatly on an intake form are not background noise. They are part of the clinical picture, and I treat them that way.

You should not have to translate yourself to get good care.
